Finnish filmmaker specialising on the creative documentary films that explore the boundaries of the genre as an art form. Mattila emphasises in his work global perspectives, in terms of the subject matters, collaborations as well as audiences. He divides his time between the roles of a producer, director and cinematographer, Mattila’s directorial debut, Chimeras (2013) examined the identity crisis of Chinese modernity through the lives of two contemporary artists. This thought provoking film has toured the festival circuit across the globe, gaining few prizes along the way and a high critical acclaim. In 2015 he was invited to participate in an international film anthology The Darkness Collection, His recent collaborations include filming the North Korean sections of feature documentary Shadow Flowers (2019) with the Academy Award Nominee Yi Seung-jun and a directing tv-series The Activist (2019) with Pirate Bay Founder Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi. Mattila’s second feature Carnival Pilgrims is realised in  2020. He is the founder of  Helsinki based production company Ideasthetic.
